FAQ
Alternative practitioners are not entitled to bill their services via the statutory health insurances. For this reason, health insurance companies do not generally cover the costs of treatment. However, many public health insurers offer add-on insurance for alternative medicine, which covers the costs of treatment by an alternative practitioner.
A non-medical practitioner is not legally allowed to treat all illnesses, and patients should also be cautious in the case of serious illnesses such as cancer or severe chronic illnesses. Treatment by an alternative practitioner alone is not advisable in such cases. Rather, seriously ill patients should primarily consult a conventional doctor and only use naturopathic methods as an adjunct to conventional medical therapy.
It is not possible to make a general statement about the willingness of health insurance funds and insurers to reimburse alternative practitioner services.
.
Private health insurance companies often cover the costs of naturopathic treatments.
Private add-on insurances reimburse the costs for some complementary practitioner services - these are in general services whose effect has been proven in the meanwhile, e.g. acupuncture.
.
As a patient, you should therefore always check exactly which services are covered by your private health insurance.
